Phosphites (esters of phosphorous acid) have general formula P(OR)3, which can be prepared by substitution reaction of phosphorus trichloride with  alcohols or phenols. Trialkyl phosphites are employed in synthesis of various phosphates and phosphonates synthesis (Perkow reaction, Michaelis?Arbuzov reaction). They also used as ligands in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. Its complexes feature lipophilic and low oxidation state metals.
